Since I know you have all been at the edge of your computer desk chairs all weekend waiting for my exciting news, I figured I’d better make this announcement as soon as I could. Sorry it had to wait till today- we had to wait until it was announced at our company because…
My husband got a promotion!
This has actually been in the works for months but a few things happened along the way that couldn’t have worked out any better for us.
My husband began a different position within the same company that we’ve been working in for the past 7 years about 2 and a half years ago. At the time, he had been offered a job at another company but negotiated to stay where he was on the condition that he be moved to another position that he had had his eye on for some time. There was a need there so our bosses agreed and it worked out very well for everyone since my husband was perfect for the job.
Over time, he proved to be very good at a few very detailed, very important jobs that his co-worker had let fall through the cracks. After trying to split those responsibilities between the two workers (my husband and his co-worker) my bosses eventually handed over all paperwork responsibilities to my husband because the co-worker was simply not able to do the job despite his having had the specific job for longer.
My husband did a very good job at taking over the full responsibility in this area and ended up making the company a lot of money that had previously been missed by his co-worker. Once things at our shop picked up, he went to our bosses and began to negotiate his wage since he was now doing the bulk of the work in his department and had proven he could do a very good job at it. These negotiations dragged on and our bosses tried very hard to low-ball my husband. He stood his ground even when I said that maybe he should just take a lower amount and move on since we could really use the money.
During this time, my husband’s direct manager stepped down as manager. Suddenly, there was a job opening and it seemed obvious who the best match for the job was. Our bosses offered my husband the job and offered him the amount he had been asking for to do the duties he had been performing already. He countered at a higher amount for the manager job and they were finally able to find a middle ground that they could agree on.
So, my husband is now a manager at our company (welcome to the club honey!) and has negotiated a much better wage for himself. His wage is a much better reflection of his value to the company now and it is very exciting for us as we are looking forward to being able to save money at a much quicker pace now.
I know he’ll do well in his new position and just hope he finds effective ways to cope with the stress. Also, I know it will be difficult for him and his co-workers to adjust to their new working relationships and I hope this goes as smoothly as possible. We’re very much looking forward to the coming season!!
